the funniness factor

i have a theory that i am not going to disclose at this point. last night i discussed it with my roommates and it resulted in slight controversy. so, we thought we would take a poll on the blog. in general, who do you think is funnier? males or females?

some objective factors to consider:
-funniness is subjective
-there are MANY different types of funny
-tiredness plays a big part
-you may just think someone is funnier because you like them
-some are funny without trying and others force it
-some (no names mentioned) are boastful about being funny
-i know a lot of funny people
-some people are so funny that it can cause tears or other accidents (i.e. peeing your pants, missing your exit, needing to pull over while driving, etc.)
-when people laugh at people being funny - that can be funny
-there seems to be more male comedians than female
-laughter is good medicine

The only way I could come to a conclusion on this matter was to select the Champion of Humor from each camp and then have them engage in an imaginary tête-à-tête where I simply got to be a fly on the wall.

For the ladies we have Elaine Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) of Seinfeld fame.

For the men - my dear friend Steven Wyble from Grapeview Washington.

Elaine is by far the best funny-woman out there. Even though Seinfeld's last episode (which was very lackluster and disappointing by the way) aired when I was in the 6th grade - re-runs and DVD releases have allowed for her character a most unnatural longevity. In my most humble opinion, the script writers and the talents of Miss Dreyfus have formulated one of the greatest recipe's for knee-slaps for many years to come.

Now who is this Steven Wyble character you may ask? He is the guy that "is funny without trying". His very essence oozes comedy. It drips from his pores and courses through his veins. His demeanor lacks any social suaveness. He is awkward at every turn and stumbles through life as the Jerry Lewis (http://www.jerrylewis.com/) of his age. But don't just take my word for it, let me share a little anecdote.

Many years ago when I was in middle school - Steve and I were on a youth group retreat at a little christian camp near the ocean called Ocean Park. We were playing a game entitled "Make me Laugh" in which one team would attempt to cause their opponents to laugh. It was my dear friend Mr Wyble's turn to try and make me crack a smile. He went into the bathroom and retrieved his toiletry bag. At this point, I assure you, I was stone faced. There is nothing remotely funny about whatever could be inside that bag. Boy' howdy was I ever wrong. He pulls out a small bottle and states rather nonchalantly "This is my shampoo". Friends - I have never laughed so hard in my entire life. It was one of those tear causing moments (not so much the peeing of the pants though). My sides hurt and I think I may have lost a lung. Steve was just being Steve and it could not have been funnier. Give the man a pile of mud and he will send you into a coma of laughing fits.

Being a male, of course I have a natural inclination to want to root for the home team - but I want to be fair and objective. However - I just can't ignore the facts - my male friend Steven James Wyble, age 21, of Grapeview Washington, majoring in Journalism at Eastern Washington University, son to Miriam and Pete Wyble, brother to Kevin Wyble - is simply the funniest person, male or female that I have ever, and probably will ever meet.

Elaine Benes is fictional - you just can't beat the real McCoy.

Hi Katie - it's great to have you apart of 2520. As for who is funnier, girls try to hard to be funny or think they are when they really aren't. When a guy is funny, it seems as if he doesn't even realize it. Therefore, I will have to place my vote for the guys. RG

Wow. Mr. Fly Away sure had a lot to say.

Also, I don't think his idea of having a head to head is the point. That wouldn't tell us anything.

Certain individual women can be as funny as men. Some are funnier.

The question is, "Which gender has more people that would qualify as funny?"

Easily - men.

There are women whom I find very funny and I am really entertained by them. But they are fairly rare.

Perhaps I should ask, "Who is sillier?" Maybe the women would win this one.

Much female humour is the kind that is incomprehensible to men, and results in high pitch laughing, screaming, crying, wetting the pants, while the guys are scratching their heads and running for cover.

For someone to be funny, he or she has to be funny to both sexes.

HA HA HA. I like the comments...very stimulating and interesting!

As for my opinion, I think that males are typically funnier than females.

Ohhh Ohhh, good observation about girls being more silly. So true.

Ladies of 2520 - If you ever go to Washington, I would try my best for you to have a get together with Steve. He might be too awkward and nervous to do it, but I could have you surprise him.
