Something's kind of "fishy" around here!

Here's the scoop...

Certain members of this house believe, or are convinced, that the Minneapolis water has begun smelling and tasting "fishy"! The others in the house agree that something is "different" about it, but wouldn't go as far as to say it is "fishy". The really "fishy" thing about this whole matter is what is causing this taste/odor?

One theory is that there are "a million dead fish" in the Minneapolis wells (p.s. I'm pretty sure that Minneapolis water is not well water!)

This is really the only theory posed thus far. We are seeking other opinions on the matter, but are seeking, above all, the TRUTH!! If any of you other Minneapolis-city-dwellers has information, or opinions, please don't keep us in suspense!

Okay, here's the scoop. The Minneapolis Dept. of Water and Power has begun using a new chemical to clean the water after that scare with the meds found in tap water. The new chemical seems to be good at negating the meds...but is a bit to the smelly side...so be thankful for the smell, it means you are not drinking someones meds...

I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS POST!!!! i can't even put my surprise into text. I have been telling Abraham for about a week that my water tastes like fish. He said he hasn't noticed. I've found it's better if I add ice, but it's so gross.

I was thinking it had something to do with spring thaw. It's driving me INSANE!!!

Molly! I'm so glad that you agree that the taste is fish! It's not just an off taste, it's fish! I had to go buy bottled water because I won't drink it.
Kathy Sturm told me this happens every year, but I don't remember it happening last year.

I don't remember it happening last year either. I would remember.

Thank you for trying to get to the bottom of this. I am so glad that you are lovers of knowledge. That's why we are friends. :)

I personally think it tastes like a watered down tea. I don't want to brag but I won the National Taste Test 16 years in a row. My taste buds are insured for over 50 million dollars and are currently being studied by NASA (Thats right, the guys that put us on the MOON). All this to say that I don't taste any fishiness and the chances of my tongue being mistaken are astronomically improbable...though I will admit I hinted a little otter.

My old roommate Dave who lives all the way down on 32nd & Lake St says he tastes the fish too! Its a pandemic!

Trent, I actually did win a water-tasting contest at the U. They had four water samples (St. Paul tap, Mpls. tap, and two kinds of bottled water). Not to sound prideful or anything, but I guessed all of them correctly. And that being said -- I think the water in Minneapolis tastes like fish. Not only does it taste like fish but it also smells like fish.

Does anyone else feel like you get out of the shower dirtier than when you entered it? If you live in Minneapolis, you should, because you are probably bathing in fish infested water.

Gross.

this was just posted on my facebook wall by Seth Magnuson:

Didn't you watch the DOCUMENTARY on Fox9?
According to the Water Treatment Facility in Mpls, the smell becomes noticeable every year around springtime. The odor is of organic debris, and is a combination of leaves, storm sewer matter, and melting snow.

The water odor will last for 4 to 6 weeks, and is safe to drink.

Some Minneapolis residents have expressed concerns about a strange odor coming from the water in their taps. But according to water treatment officials, the water is completely safe to drink.

I tasted the fish while brushing my teeth last night. Zach did not believe me...but admitted he doesn't drink from the bathroom faucet anyway because it has tooth paste drips on it............

I wonder if anyone will understand how funny Emily's comment is. Probably only me because I lived my whole life with Zach not drinking out of the bathroom faucet because it has toothpaste drips on it. I laughed out loud, Emily, because I could hear Zachary saying that. :)

ew that's really gross....

Actually guys, Edina uses well water and it is always crystal clear, sweet-tasting to the point that I'm sure that it was distilled before hand.

Minneapolis is gross.

Fly_Away said...

I haven't noticed any fishiness lately. I think the beast has been vanquished. And Gabby's comment painfully reminds me of the sweet crystal clear private well I grew up with in Washington.

and reminds me of the wonderful well water i had while growing up in kenyon.

I have to say I do love my well water. But I have noticed the smell in both St. Paul and Minneapolis before. Thats what you get for living in the City of Lakes - fish water. The big question: Which tastes worse, fish water or iron water at Trout Lake Camp??

Hey, girls!
Just last night, Andrea told me that her cup smelled like fish. I smelled it and was surprised to smell just how fishy it was! Okay.... we live in Minnetonka--but I guess there are lots of lakes around here, too! Bottoms up~!
